EIBERGEN Language degradation is a thorn in the side of many. But what can you do about it? Wessel Bottenberg decided to tackle the impoverishment of our language in his own way.
Through the website HetNieuweVloeken.nl, the 19-year-old student and entrepreneur hopes to encourage people to use language more creatively. "In the past, you would occasionally hear words like bengel (little rascal), apenkop (monkey head), doerak (dumbass), and duivelsjong (devil's youngster). While they were swear words, they usually had a humorous undertone. Today's swear words are often crude, provoke aggression, and add little to our language. With this initiative, we hope to change that."
Van Aap tot Zultkop
On HetNieuweVloeken.nl, the curse words of the past are being revived. From "Aap" to "Zultkop" (Sickface), the ingredients for a good old rant are neatly arranged alphabetically. Visitors also have the option of adding their own "curses from the past." Bottenberg: "People argue anyway. But most disagreements are over trivialities. Harsh insults provoke aggression and only escalate the conflict. With this site, we want to contribute to a healthier society."
