- The air vibrates with heat above the dusty track. Berger, our Dutch short-distance champion, achieved a world record time (1934) of 10.3 seconds in the 100m on Sunday. He owed this achievement largely to his excellent start. In this photo, you can see that the man in the middle (Berger) immediately has a lead over the other young athletes. Arms waving vigorously, a Berger can't suppress his grin. His feet barely touch the ground. You can see the feeling of freedom, the summer of August 1934. The photographer knew exactly why he chose this location. The simple houses in the background, the sand track, the pure joy of a no-nonsense race… you see the Catholic camaraderie and youthful fun.
